Chesky Records to Reinstate DVD-Audio Release Schedule

It has been confirmed that Chesky Records are to return to DVD-Audio and will begin releasing new titles in the format in the near future.

Recipients of the most recent Chesky mailing-list update will have noticed a promotional competition, the prize for five lucky winners being a new DVD-Audio sampler disc.

The disc features “…a mind-boggling array of original music – rock, world, monster percussion and a few very strange tunes”, and one track is performed using cello, helicopter and cars (we kid you not).

When I asked David Chesky if this disc signified the beginning of a series of DVD-Audio releases, he confirmed that yes it was, “…we are going to try some”.

Chesky Records were one of the first labels to release recordings as high-resolution 96kHz PCM by stretching the specifications of the DVD-Video format to their maximum, but have since been issuing most of their new titles on either CD or SACD.

David mentioned that Chesky had “…not been so successful at selling them (DVD-Audio)”, but the market has moved forward since their last DVD-Audio release and one would hope that future high-resolution titles from the label will be made available to those who have embraced both formats.

To be entered for the Chesky DVD-Audio sampler give-away, all you have to do is subscribe to their newsletter. Send an e-mail message to [email protected] with the word “Subscribe” (without the quotes) in the subject line and your own e-mail address in the body of the message.
